My Name is Tony. I complelety tore my achilles tendon on October 22 2019. I hope my experience helps makes yours a little easier.
I am a 28 year old man who works a sedatary job but lives a very active life otherwise. Prior to my injury I weight trained 5-6 nights a week. In addition to strength training I also played sports like baseball, softball, rugby, tennis and volleyball.
The Achilles tear is not a one size fits all injury. This injury will effect everyone slightly different. Much of this is due to our physical composition and lifestyle. This is why I feel it is important to share my demograpics because my duration of recovery time may be weeks, months and maybe even years different from others.
One thing that we all have in common is that our bodies need to be property maintained during recovery. I believe we can do all the physical therapy in the world but improper diet will greatly extend the length of your recovery, regardless of age, gender or size. Much of what I share is about nutritional health and mental fortitude.
I want my articles and story to help others get through this long rigorous process as stress free as possible. Hopefully I can provide some unique options and ideas that may also speed up your recovery.
Why do this?
I have endured my fair share of injuries. For some reason also on the right side of my body. Sprained ankles, shin splints, broken wrist, sprained thumb, torn labrum, partially torn rotator cuff, ulna nerve impingement and 2 baseball related concussions. By no means am I bragging. Trust me, this all sucked. But all of those injures happened and I knew what to expect. Most of these inuries had time tables of less than 6 months.
I knew right away my achilles was torn. I also knew right away how serious this was and knew many athletes never fully recovered from this injury. My only real understanding was that Kevin Durant (NBA basketball player) had torn his just a few months ago and his timeline was 9-12 months. This was a world class athlete with unlimited resources and time. I am not. So what the heck is a realistic expectation for me. What i found was anywhere from 6-18 months. Thats a huge difference. I wanted more but was only given what I could dig up.
I had surgery 9 days after injury. I spent the majority of my free time during these days reading about nutrition and lifestyle changes I could adopt to help speed up my recovery. I am not a pro athlete, but I wanted my body to have every edge.
By the day surgery came around. I felt prepared.
